Our premier race is the full distance, 42.2km Show Science Tauranga Marathon – and we’re pulling out all the stops for our marathoners to offer you an unrivaled event experience. Your course includes highlights such as the ocean beach in Mount Maunganui, the stunning base track around Mauao, the broad sweep of the Harbour Bridge and the jaw-dropping beauty of the Waikareao Estuary loop. All of that is an aperitif for the main course … a thrilling city centre finish in the heart of the bars and restaurants of downtown Tauranga.

In these uncertain times, Running Events are doing everything we possibly can to give us the best possible oppertunity to deliver the outstanding event experience our participants expect. The COVID-19 pandemic (and some crazy weather events) have taught us a great lesson … hope for the best, plan for the worst. To this end, we have developed a contingency plan which we believe covers all possible scenarios.

Important! From 06/10/2021 – and only during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, where government advice is that the safety of our events is best served by only allowing COVID-19 vaccinated participants, we may require proof of vaccination as a condition of your participation. This is now included in our standard entry waiver. We strongly reccommend participants familiarlise themselves with this – and all of our terms and conditions – prior to entering.

Start Line Congestion

We don’t want anyone to feel as though they can’t participate in the event. If you’re worried about starting close to people, we’ll have the start line open up to 15 minutes and you may start whenever you like in that period.  Please use this time to maintain social distancing if needed.  Your official time will not start until you cross the timing mats.

Hand Sanitiser

Hand sanitiser will be readily available at the refueling station, registration, gear drop and waste stations areas. Please help yourself as often as needed.

Important!  Please do not attend if you:

  • are unwell
  • are a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19
  • are waiting for a test result for COVID-19
  • are self-isolating.

Continue to practice good hygiene. This means:

  • Keeping 2 metres away from people you don’t know
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or coughing/sneezing into your elbow
  • Disposing of used tissues appropriately in a bin
  • Using the hand sanitiser located around the event site:
    • before eating or handling food
    • after using the toilet
    • after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or wiping children’s noses
    • after touching public surfaces

Please remember to scan the Covid QR code poster when you arrive at the event site or sign the manual register at the Registration Tent.

The event will now be a Virtual Event. For those who complete and upload their result to the Tauranga Marathon results page, your race items will be sent out to you. See the Virtual Run page HERE for details.

Aid Stations

No longer applicable. Please ensure you take along drink and snacks on your virtual run, or have someone in your bubble meet you at certain locations to provide some sustenance if needed.

Tauranga Event T-Shirt

The Tauranga Marathon event t-shirt is available to purchase when you register. Made from light-weight, dry-fit material, the shirt design features the event logo. You can order your t-shirt during the entry process or – if you change your mind later – add it to your registration later via your my.runningevents login. You can pick up your t-shirt from the Merchandise tent at the venue during pre-race registration or on race day.

Important! All of our t-shirts are produced months in advance of the event and quantities and sizes are strictly limited. Please order your t-shirt early – once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Important! Compare the chest measurement with a favourite t-shirt to be sure of your sizing. Our measurements are taken in cm with the t-shirt laid on a flat surfaces. The length measurement is taken from the top of the neckline to the bottom of the shirt. The Chest measurement is taken from armpit to armpit.

Race Number

It is a requirement of your participation in the event that you wear your race number on the front of your shirt at all times whilst taking part. Your number should be secured to your shirt by a safety pin in each corner (if you don’t have any, come to the Registration desk on race morning and help yourself to some from our containers). Your electronic timing tag is attached to the back of your race number so be careful not to crease, crush or puncture it.

Pimp Your Bib!
When you register, you will have the opportunity to select a nickname to print on your race number. Feel free to be creative – but please keep it clean folks! If you don’t select a nickname, your first name will be printed instead. If you prefer to fly under the radar – or you want to get creative with a sharpie – just put a full stop in the nickname field and we will leave it blank.

Important! Race numbers are printed in two batches. The first batch is sent to print approximately 28 days prior to the event and will include everyone registered in the event at that time. The second batch is sent to print 3-4 days before the event and includes everyone registered up to that time. Note that once your race number has been printed, it is no longer possible to change the printing. If you transfer your entry to another person and your race number has already been printed, your name will still appear on there.

Important! Please don’t lose your race number. Replacement numbers are $10.

Timing Tag

No longer applicable for 2021. All results will need to be uploaded to your my.runningevents.co.nz results page as per the Virtual Run stipulations. Please check HERE for instructions on how to record and upload your result.

When you receive your race number, your electronic timing tag will be attached to the back. We are using disposable stick-on timing tags this year. We are sure you will appreciate the convenience of not having to attach a plastic tag to your shoes and then return it at the finish. All you have to remember is to secure your race number to the front of your shirt and you’re all set. Try to avoid holding your arm in front of the number as you cross the finish line (e.g. to turn off your watch) as this can sometimes affect the tag reading. Just wait until a few steps after the timing mat.

Important! There is no need to return your timing tag.

Important! Keep your race number with you when you finish as we will use it to register you in the prize draw for the Awards Ceremony – see below.

Finisher Medal

Everyone who finishes the Tauranga Marathon – irrespective of distance – will receive an exclusive commemorative medal.

Exact medal designs will be released closer to the event. However, we can tell you that those in the marathon will receive a distinctive and specially minted medal only available to those who complete the full distance event. We believe strongly that your Tauranga Marathon Finisher Medal will become a treasured possession and we’re committed to providing a medal commensurate with your achievement. It will be heeeeavvvvy, dude!

For those taking on the ultimate challenge in the 50km Ultra Marathon, we have a super-special “Ultra Halo” which your marathon medal will nestle inside. This demonstrates that a) you are a heavenly force of nature and, b) you owned the marathon course and went beyond! Designs for the halo will be released closer to the event but we promise it will be ah – maze – ing!

Finisher T-Shirt (42k & 50k Participants Only)

Those in the marathon and ultra will also receive an exclusive, cannot-be-bought-in-the-shops finisher t-shirt along with their medal (& Halo) when they finish. Just head into the specially designated Marathon/Ultra Recovery Area just beyond the finish line to collect. There is no monetary charge for this -tshirt – it is included with your entry. However, it is not “free” – it *must* be earned! Don’t come crying to us after the event saying “I pulled up lame” / “couldn’t make it today” / “took a wrong turn and accidentally did the 10k instead” – “but please can I still have my marathon finisher t-shirt”?

The answer is “No!” – this t-shirt is only available for the legends who completed the full distances!


The revTab is a self-adhesive plate which is delivered direct to your home approximately three weeks after your event with your name, distance and time engraved on it. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate and immortalise your achievement. Where possible, our finisher medals have a recess on the back to fit your revTab insert.

You can purchase a revTab when registering for your event. For individual events, they are $17.50 and for the Auckland Half Marathon Series Grand Slam, they are $19. The price includes delivery to your door. If you didn’t order one when you registered – but would like to do so now – you can do it via my.runningevents.co.nz up until race day. Just click on the LOGIN button at the top of the web site and follow the prompts from there.

Train Movements –  Not applicable in 2021! Virtual Run to be held.

Trains are a major part of life in Tauranga and the area has many level crossings where trains take priority over road traffic. All race distances include courses which pass over at least one level crossing. Running Events and Kiwirail have worked together to ensure there is as little disruption to the event as possible due to train movements. However, it is inevitable that some participants will be held up by trains and it is important that participants behave in a safe manner when this happens.

Where are the level crossings?
There are five level crossings within the field of play. They are as follows:

  • Totara St (North): 16.2km mark of Marathon and Half Marathon.
  • Totara St (South): 16.6km mark of Marathon and Half Marathon.
  • Cross Rd: 20.2km of Marathon
  • Maxwells Rd: 21.1km of Marathon, 0.6km of 10K.
  • Dive Cres: 20.8km of Half Marathon, 0.3 & 4.7km of 5K, 1.7km of Kids Dash (this level crossing is sparsely used on race day and we do not anticipate any train movements affecting participants here).

Will I be stopped by a train?
It is important to understand that it is extremely unlikely you will be affected by a train movement. Although we know some participants will undoubtedly be held up somewhere across the course, prior experience puts the total number of affected athletes at around 20 – or about 1% of the total field. Event start times and train timetables have been adjusted specifically to allow the majority of participants to pass over each level crossing unhindered and we do not expect anyone in the top 75% of any event to be affected. Nevertheless, if you are towards the back of the field then there is a chance you will be stopped and you should be prepared for this.

What happens if a train arrives?
Above all else, safety is our number one concern. Race marshals will be on hand at each crossing point to ensure that participants are stopped when a train is coming. Failure to adhere to their instructions comes with an instant and irreversible DQ.

As soon as the crossing is closed, race officials will be ready to scan the QR code on your race number as you arrive at the crossing point. This will tell the timing system that you are currently held up at a train crossing. There will be at least 2 scanning stations available at each crossing. Once your bib has been scanned, your race time is effectively “on hold”. When the train has passed and the level crossing is full re-opened, the official in charge of the crossing will release all held runners and scan a release bar code to tell the timing system to restart any held times. You will be able to see in your online race results the time that you were held and the time that you were released from the holding area. If you feel either of these is incorrect, you can contact us through the event web site for more information.

To ensure the safe operation of the Tauranga Marathon event, road or lane closures are in place in several areas around Mount Maunganui and Tauranga on event day. Running Events – and the participants themselves – are indebted to local residents for their patience, understanding and support  of the event and the safety of all concerned.

Parking & Bus Transfer

This is one of those events when people say “you should carpool” that they really mean it!  You will need to park in the surrounding streets but there are many areas within an easy walk through the Wairakei Reserve to the event site. As always, the earlier – the better!  Please park considerately remembering to keep resident driveways clear at all times.

Bus Transfer  (10K entrants only)

Bethlehem Coachlines shuttle buses will operate from Gordon Spratt Reserve to your 10K start line, dropping you in plenty of time to get ready to run or walk all the way back! Those in the 10K will get a free bus transfer to their start line.

Please don’t be late! Buses will not wait and the last one will be departing promptly at 8:20am.

Spot Prizes & Merit Awards

The event will have two Awards Ceremonies where we will acknowledge some of the excellent performances on the day, as well as giving away thousands of dollars of spot prizes from our sponsors. The main ceremony will take place on the main stage at the venue and will include the 50k, 42k, 21k, 10k and 5k events. The second ceremony will take place later in the day for the 2k Kids’ Dash.  See the Race Day Schedule for times.

Important!  As some of the ultra and marathon entrants will still be on course, all ultras and marathoners who crossed the start line will automatically be included in the Spot Prize Draw.

Spot Prizes

We have many wonderful spot prizes to give away thanks to our wonderful sponsors. The grand prize is a big screen TV. Remember – you must be present at the prize giving (or have started the 50k or 42k race) to claim your prize. Only those who scan their timing tags at the spot prize timing point will be eligible to win a prize. The prize draw timing point will be activated approximately 15-20 minutes before the ceremony – listen out for announcements. All you have to do is walk across the timing mat with your race number and you will be registered in the draw. Easy as!

Important! In the event of inclement weather, we may elect to cancel the Awards Ceremony. Listen out for announcements on the PA or check out our Facebook page. If this does happen, all prize winners will be announced on our Facebook page and prizes will be couriered out to them.

Information For Walkers

Important! Due to the cancellation of the event and the change to a Virtual Run, there will be no Competitive Walk options for any of the virtual events.

Running Events welcome walkers in all of our events, irrespective of the distance. Walkers routinely make up around 15-20% of the total field. We take the needs of our walkers seriously and have made changes to how our events operate to allow walkers to be appropriately recognised and accommodated. The notes here will help you, as a walker, to get the most from the event and help familiarise you with our setup for walkers.

Important! In the spirit of fair competition, we ask that all competitors adhere strictly to the rules. Competitive Walkers must not run or jog at any time during the event and must maintain contact with the ground at all times.

Hybrid Walk/Run or Competitive Walk?
When registering for a race distance which includes a competitive walk prize, you will be prompted to identify yourself as Runner, Hybrid Run/Walk or Competitive Walker. If you plan to walk most of the way but want to have the option to jog or run at any point, you should select the hybrid option. If you intend to walk throughout the event and want to measure yourself against other walkers, you should choose the Competitive Walk option.

Important! Hybrid run/walk competitors should start on the same start horn as the runners. For the  21K and 10K distances, Competitive Walk participants should start on the dedicated walkers start which will be three minutes after the main field.

Are There Prizes?
Please see the Merit Awards section for details of prizes. To be eligible for awards, walkers must enter in the Competitive Walk category, start on the Competitive Walk start signal and must only walk during the event.

How Is the Walking Competition Judged?
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide walking judges for our events. Therefore, we rely upon the integrity of those taking part to adhere to the rules of the walking competition and not run or jog at any time. In our experience over the years, we have found that the most common error in the walking competition is where people register as a competitive walker but decide to run on race day. We have worked around this issue by having a dedicated race start for walkers wherever there are Competitive Walk merit prizes at stake.

Important! We do not make judgement calls on disqualifications based on reports from other competitors. Unless advised otherwise by the competitor in question, we trust the integrity of our competitive walkers. In all cases, the Race Director’s decision shall be final.

Are there Cut-Off Times?
Yes, please refer to the Cut-Off Times tab for further details.

Cut-Off Times

The official cut-off times are:
7 hrs 20 min for the Ultra
7 hrs for the Marathon
3 hrs 30 min for the Half-Marathon
2 hrs for the 10km Classic
1 hr for the 5km Fun Run

Marshals, aid stations, traffic management, signage, etc. – may all be removed from the course on a schedule equal to the course cut off pace. If you are unable to maintain the course cut off pace, you must be ready to stop participating and make your way back to the finish area. At your option, you may elect to continue and complete the course at your own volition. This means you must carry sufficient water and nutrition for your needs, be able to direct yourself around the course and observe and care for your own safety. Where the event has been taking place on closed roads, you must move onto the footpath – where one exists – or to the side of the road and continue as a pedestrian.

Running Events want to encourage all of our participants to make it to the finish line – no matter how long it takes. The above conditions notwithstanding, we are normally at the race site conducting the awards ceremony or packing up the site for at least an hour after the official close off. Provided you make yourself known to us when you finish – and confirm that you followed the correct course – we will be delighted to record your finish time in the official results and present you with your finisher medal.

Event Safety

It is compulsory for all participants to attend, listen to and heed the advice of the safety briefing. Above all else, however, please understand that no roads are closed during the event. You have sole responsibility for your own safety. Do not leave any pavement, cross any road, pass any driveway unless you deem it is safe for you to do so.

Please remind your own spectators that they should not attempt to accompany you in vehicles, bikes or otherwise. They must follow the normal rules of the road to reach vantage points.

Course Safety

Remember that other a very small area near the start and finish of the event, all roads are open to the public at all times. Stick to the pavement where one exists and do not cross any intersection unless you have determined to your own satisfaction that it is safe to do so.

Please remember the golden rule … Always give way to vehicles. No matter who has right of way, vehicles always win.

50km Ultra Marathon

The ultimate challenge at the Tauranga Marathon is New Zealand’s premier road ultra-marathon. The first 7.8km lead-in to the full marathon course starts in the city and takes in the Harbour Bridge as the sun rises, before the thrill of running through the marathon start line to join the full marathon course. If an ultra-marathon is that nagging itch you always wanted to scratch then this ultraFLAT and ultraFAST course is the one you’ve been waiting for.

Shoe Science Tauranga Marathon

An outstanding coastal tour of the best that Mount Maunganui and the City of Tauranga has to offer. Starting under the mount in tranquil Pilot Bay and taking in amazing ocean views from the waterfront out-and-back, followed by the stunning Mauao base track. Next up is the beautiful sweep of the Harbour Bridge as you cross over to the Tauranga side. There’s more coastal goodness on the utilty trail to Fergusson Park, followed by perhaps the best of all – the Waikareao Boardwalk track. The final few ks through town take you to our magnificent finish line right in the heart of the bars and restaurants of downtown. The crowds will be waiting … all we need is you.

Half Marathon

Flat, fast and unbelievably scenic, the half marathon course takes in the best Mount Maunganui has to offer, from ocean beaches to the Mauao base track, before crossing the sparkling waters on the Harbour Bridge to the city. By the time you land on the Tauranga side, its just a hop, skip and a jump to Dive Crescent and onto The Strand for a thrilling harbourside finish. Congrats … you made it!
Important! The section under the Trinity Wharf Hotel (just after 20km) includes some low headroom beams and pipes. Look out for and listen to warnings from our crew and take care if you are a taller runner.

10K Classic

The 10k Classic course starts on stunning Harbour Drive in Otumoetai. Once across Chapel St, it takes in the magnificent Waikareao Estuary track  before a final short section through town and onto the finish line crowds in downtown Tauranga on The Strand. Flat. Fast. Scenic. Awesome!
Important! The start line for the 10k Classic is a 15-25 mins jog/walk from the finish area. Its a perfect warm-up, but make sure you allow plenty of time if you need to make your way between the two on race morning.

5K Fun Run & Walk

The 5k Fun Run & Walk course is an out-and-back from the finish line and takes in the superb sweep of the Harbour Bridge. On the Mount side of the bridge, a loop through beautiful Tauranga Bridge Marina includes an aid station.
Important! please KEEP RIGHT when running on the harbour bridge footpath. Runners returning from the Mount side of the bridge on their return section will arrive much sooner than you think!

2km Kids’ Dash

The Kids Dash course starts right next to that cheeky ragamuffin, Hairy MacLary and friends! Beginning at the famous statue, the kids course is two 1km loops with the final section a super-fun, super-breathless dash down The Strand to the finish line and … that finisher medal!

Tauranga’s main party street is our event base for one of the best finish lines you will find anywhere. Our event site will span over The Waterfront, The Strand & Masonic Park.  Bars, cafes and magnificent Tauranga Harbour will be your backdrop as you run down The Strand – fully closed to traffic, just for us – to claim your finisher medal. Your my.runningevents.co.nz dashboard allows you to make a variety of changes to your registration without even needing to ask us. How good is that? From within your account, you can update your contact details, upgrade or downgrade your race selection or transfer your entry to another person. You can also add additional items like t-shirts and revTabs to your registration and pay the extra online. Just click on the LOGIN  link in the menu and follow the prompts to access the system or create a new account. Provided your account is email validated, you will find all of your registrations listed here. Select the one you wish to change and follow the Make Changes options from there. If you do have any difficulties, please just get back to us through this Contact Form.

Important: Please do not ask for an exception. Our refund and transfer policy is clearly stated and applied evenly, without exception. We do not make exceptions to this policy under any circumstances whatsoever.

Single Race Registrations

  • If you registered at least 28 days prior to race day. your race number – with timing device attached – will be sent to you in the mail to the address specified in your registration. If you change address, make sure you let us know in time. You can expect to receive this approximately 7-10 days prior to the event.
  • If you registered within the last 28 days prior to race day, you will need to collect your race number from the Registration Tent at the event venue during the pre-race or race-morning registration sessions. See the event web site INFO section for details.

Series Pass Registrations

  • If you registered for an Auckland Half Marathon Series Pass at least 28 days prior to the Devonport Half Marathon, all of your race numbers (for all of the series events) and other materials will be sent to you by courier. You can expect to receive this approximately 7-10 days prior to the Devonport event. If you registered within the final 28 days prior to the Devonport Half Marathon, your race numbers and other materials will be available to collect from the Registration Tent at the Devonport event venue during the pre-race or race-morning registration sessions.   • If you registered for an North Shore Run Series Pass before the courier delivery deadline (please refer to the Important Dates section), your race number and other materials will be sent to you by courier. You can expect to receive them approximately 7-10 days prior to the first race of the series. If you registered after the courier deadline, your race number and other materials will be available to collect from the Registration Tent at the first event during the pre-race or race-morning registration sessions.   • If you ordered any merchandise with your registration, it will be available for collection from the Merchandise tent at the event venue during either the pre-race or race morning registration times. See the event web site INFO section for details.

Our MyLaps disposable timing tags are small stickers that can be found on the back of your race number.  The tag sends out a unique UHF signal that identifies you and records the exact time at which you passed the detection mats. The tags are designed to withstand rain, sweat and normal wear-and-tear – but please don’t fold or bend the bib as this can damage it.  All you need to do to make sure your result is properly recorded is to wear your race number on the front of your shirt throughout the event. The tag is disposable – you do not need to return it after the event.

Important! Keep hold of your race number after you finish. You will need it to register for the prize draw at the Awards Ceremony. Listen out for announcements.

Of course! We love walkers and all of our events are open to runners, joggers and walkers alike. Many of our events offer specific merit prizes, start times and rules for competitive walkers. Please check the event web site and you will find this information on the “Walkers” tab.
